The scholarship game: Numbers add up for parents

By the time Kevin White was a junior soccer player at Carrollton Creekview in 2003, his parents had already figured out the harsh reality of college athletic scholarships.

Very few high school graduates play college sports on scholarship – especially at the Division I level – and even fewer receive anything close to a full ride.

White ended up receiving a 25 percent athletic scholarship each of his four years at Tulsa despite being a standout high school and club soccer player.

“There was always a promise for more money that was never there,” said White, who now works for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in Atlanta. Read more…

PJK Scholarship Golf Tournament

Calling all South Shore golfers! The sixth annual Pamela Jean Kowalewski (PJK) Scholarship Golf Tournament is here! The tournament will take place on Monday, July 21 at the Harmon Golf Club in Rockland, MA. Proceeds from the tournament go to the PJK scholarship fund, benefiting college-bound students of Bridgewater-Raynham High School. The tournament will be followed by a banquet, raffle and presentation to tournament winners.

In 1993, Pam unexpectedly passed away from AL Amyloidosis. In 1994, Pam’s husband, Bob, and her friends founded the PJK Scholarship and held a charity ball to raise the initial funds for the scholarship. The family chose the Bridgewater-Raynham High School because in 1981, the family moved to Bridgewater and raised their family. The three Kowalewski children (Matt, Sarah, and Jill) attended the high school. Later, the focus of the fund raising efforts changed and the first ever PJK Scholarship Golf Tournament was held in 2003. Each year the scholarship grows a little more and the benefit to one B-R student increases. Ultimately, the scholarship serves two purposes; to help those close to Pam cope with the loss of someone so special and to give back to the community Pam loved so much. Read more…
